Happy Earth Day!

Hi Peeps!

Since today is Earth Day, I thought I'd share some of my personal tips to being more Earth friendly. Thus I will prove just how easy it is being green. Sorry, Kermit.

As I go into this, I will note that most of these are probably well known or practiced by some or most people already. At any rate, there may be some that you don't know and can easily start doing. Pretty much, I'm letting a bit of my inner hippie out today in order to make the planet a bit more happy. ( Hippie...happy...get it?...I should probably stop explaining my jokes...or lack of jokes...)

Tip #1:  When you're not using an electrical appliance, keep it unplugged. Even if it's turned to the 'off' mode, it's still sucking up energy that isn't actually being used. By unplugging it, not only are you helping the planet, but also your pocket book, as this will cut down on your electrical bill!

Tip #2: Use as much natural light as possible! Open up the blinds during the day instead of turning on the lights. If I, as a Canadian ( where we have winter for like 8 months of the year and therefore have short hours of sunlight) can do it for the most part, then I'm sure it will be an easy fix for anyone else out there! Also, doing your makeup in natural light yields a much more natural and perfected look. No foundation lines!

Tip #3: Stemming from my last tip, turn off the lights when your not in a room. This ones pretty self explanatory. Your not in it, so why does it need to be lit? However, if you say  leave a room for a couple minutes and then plan on coming right back ( like let's say you need to grab a pen from another room. Just for example.) then leave the light on. It's actually probably more harmful to keep turning the lights on and off than it is to leave them on for a little while. Just don't leave them on for hours on end, okay? Actually, funny story, I came home from a party over the weekend at my parents and they had left the lights on. They never do this, so I thought maybe they were still awake. I let our family dog in to go say "hi" to them, but turns out they weren't awake but sound asleep in their bed. And our dog ran in woke them up! Funny for me, not so much for them. See Mum and Dad, turning off the lights would've helped both you and the planet out!
How apt is this picture!?

Tip #4: Try to use less hot water in the shower. I know, I know, I love me a hot shower too. But the energy it takes to get that water boiling hot is crazy. Plus, hot water can really damage your hair by breaking the ends and stripping the color ( if you color your hair). I'm not saying you have to shower in ice cold water. That would suck! But try to cut back your hot water amount and use more lukewarm water. And try to take shorter showers in general. Your hair and the Earth will thank you!

Tip #5: Dim the screen light setting on your phone. Or even your laptop. You literally do not need it to be the brightest setting possible. This will help you to save your battery a bit more and therefore, you'll have to charge it less. Simple really!

Tip #6: Don't leave your car idling, even if you'll "only be a second". It actually burns less gas to turn off your vehicle and restart it than it does to leave it running. I know this can be hard in the winter months, but really try to do it. That way your burn less gas so you don't need to fill up as much and you won't pollute the air. Or have your car stolen.
That too.

Tip #7: Walk! It's that simple. Unless it is crappy outside and you live far away from your destination, why drive? You don't know how many people I've seen drive somewhere that was a 5 or 10 minute walk away from where they lived. Quite stupid and unnecessary, in my humble opinion. Plus it's good exercise and you get to see more of the world that way!

And last, but not least, Tip #8: If possible, grow some of your own veggies or fruits. This may seem way hippie of me, but I grew up on a farm and we did this quite a bit. So I'm not a total environmentalist, I'm just a farm kid who loves the taste of fresh garden carrots that still have a little soil on them. Yummy! Don't knock it 'til you try it.
So yes, if you have the space to do it, plant a garden. That way you don't have to pay as much at the grocery store plus you're helping the Earth out by growing more nutrient rich plants. Everyone is a winner!
My garden at the beginning of last summer. It grew like crazy, yo.

So there are 8 fairly easy tips to help the average person be a little more green. It's small little changes like this that can help to make a big difference to the Earth. So try  to do one or two of these every so often. Pretty soon, they will become habit and then you can do another. And another. And another. And so on.

Happy Earth Day one and all!

My Top Six Guys with Accents

Hi Peeps!

Today, I wanted to do something a little lighter, but much hotter.

...You know, I really wanted that to sound cool, but I think it ended up more cringey. Any who...

Guys with Accents are hot. This is a fact. Don't try to deny it. Any and all arguments you may have will be invalid.

So without further ado, here are my personal top six guys with accents:

1.

Name: Richard Madden
Accent: Scottish
Where you may have seen him: Being the sexy eldest Stark son and King of the North, Robb, in Game of Thrones on HBO
What he is up to now: After the "Red Wedding" in GoT, you can see those beautiful blue eyes and charming smile of Richard's in The Promise and in Cinderella (out in 2015). The latter he will be playing Prince Charming. How apt.
What makes me love him? He can look hot as hell in a flowy pirate-y type shirt ( that might I add, is like half hanging off him in the most amazing way? Watch GoT).

2.

Name: Niall Horan
Accent: Irish
Where you may know him from: Being the adorable and silly blonde member of  the famous band, One Direction.
What he is up to now: Gearing up to join his fellow band members ( Louis, Zayn, Liam and Harry, who have various British Accents. Just saying ladies) on there Worldwide Stadium Where We Are tour, kicking off in South America on April 25th ( THAT'S THIS FRIDAY!!!! Just a wee bit excited here.)
What makes me love him? He sings. He plays guitar. And his laugh is just too cute. Can I just marry him so I can look into those blue eyes everyday. I'm not asking for much.

3.

Name: Ashton Irwin
Accent: Australian
Where you may know him from:  The amazing, up-and-coming band that is, 5 Seconds of Summer ( or 5SOS for short)
What he is up to now: Currently, finishing up the 5SOS North American Tour ( called the STARSSTRIPESANDMAPLESYRUP Tour. Best. Name. Ever.) and heading back to OZ with his band mates ( Luke, Michael and Calum) for the Australian Lag of their tour. And they will be joining the lovely One Direction boys on tour again this summer. I may or may not be in the fetal position at the moment.
What makes me love him? He's a drummer, meaning nice arms and he can sing. Not to metion those dimples and his crazy cute laugh. Adorkable!

4.

Name: Dan Howell
Accent: British
Where you may know him from: Either his successful YouTube Channel, Danisnotonfire or as a co-host with his best friend Phil Lester on BBC1 Radio. You choose.
What is he up to now: Continuing to make epic YouTube Videos and having that beautiful accent of his sent over the radio waves.
What makes me love him?  Not only can he make me nearly wet myself from watching his videos ( sorry for the mental picture there) but look at that smirk. GAHD.

5.

Name: Nikolaj Coster-Waldau
Accent: Danish
Where may have seen him: Being the incestuous, but dashing, Ser Jaime Lannister on Game of Thrones ( seriously, watch it!)
What he is up to now: Starring alongside Cameron Diaz and Leslie Mann in The Other Woman, out this Friday (April 25th; Gosh, this Friday is a pretty big day!)  Let's hope there is more silver screen time for him in the future. And tons more on the small screen too!
Why I love him: That smolder. *sigh* No Flynn Rider moments for you, good Ser ( haha, get it?)

6.

Name: Oskar Eriksson
Accent: Swedish
Where you may know him from: The hot, young skip of the Swedish Men's Curling Team at the 2014 Winter Olympics.
What he is up to now: Training for the next curling match.
What makes me love him? He's adorable and obviously clever. You have to be to play this sport.

There are literally a million more guys I could mention as well. I mean, this was tough! Whittling down to just 6 guys/6 accents? Phew, I'm amazed I did it. But the thing is, that while these guys have a sexy accent, they are also very talented and hard working men. No matter what genre they're in. So kudos to you guys. Not just sexy, but smart. And talented. And ambitious. And awesome. Did I say sexy?

Alright guys

Time

Hi Peeps,

Today will not be a cheerful blog post. Though I hope it will still hold some sort of interest.

A few days ago, 4 students from the University I attend, along with another student from another post secondary institution were brutally stabbed by another student from my University. In short 5 young people were murdered by another young person.

I will not go into details, nor make a whole blog post about their passing. I feel that, since I did not know any of them personally, it would be disrespectful of me to write about them in length. I wouldn't want some random stranger doing that to me or my family. It's not my place. But that being said, I can write about what this experience has taught me. It isn't the first time I've realized this either.

Life is short. If you didn't know that by now, then where have you been? Like I wrote in my last blog post, we keep waiting for tomorrow and don't live in the now, it'll be gone before we know it. Some of us won't get a tomorrow or maybe a three months from now. Maybe we won't see next Christmas or celebrate our next birthday. Nothing is guaranteed.

When things like this happen, I find myself wondering about who they were as people. It's funny, we pass multiple people a day, are in so many lives for brief moments and we never even realize. For example, I wondered if I had ever seen any of them on campus at a brief glance. Or if they were in my classes. Even when it is not close to home, I still have these thoughts. In one of my psychology classes we watched a documentary on bullying. And each time they told the date that a young person had ended their life, I thought about what had been happening elsewhere in the world at that moment. Was there a wedding?  Did someone lose their dog? Was it just another day? All these things and more go through my head  and it makes me sad that while we were all busy living our lives, someone else was ending their own.
I don't know, I guess I've always found it so interesting that we can be so aware of the world but so unaware at the same time. I know that we can't stop the world from turning every time something bad happens to a living creature on this Earth. We would never move forward. So I guess we just really need to make the most of our time here, because it is so fleeting.
I'm not entirely sure if this post made any sense. I guess it's partially me venting my thoughts about what happened to these young people, the fact that 6 families lost their child in some way, shape or form and just wanting to remind myself that I don't always have tomorrow. My heart goes out to these families, but also to other families who may have lost a loved one today or yesterday or ten years ago. I hope the time you spent with them while they were live was happy, even if it was cut short. You may have lost a loved one, but you gained a new guardian angel.

Back and Forth

Hi Peeps!

The swings have taught me so much. Yes, I'm talking about the playground equipment. And no, I'm not crazy. They actually have taught me a lot. Let me explain by telling you a little story ...

...all about how my life got flipped, turned upside down...

...not that one.

When I was probably 4 or 5, I really got into going on the swings. Before I had always been a bit afraid, because of my fear of heights, but around that time I just kind of forgot about it. Ah, to be able to forget things as easily as I did as a child. Any who, the only problem with going on the swings was that I was too short to be able to push myself. I was teeny. The only way my feet could touch the ground was if my bum wasn't on the seat. Not really productive to the whole riding a swing thing, huh? Therefore, I always had to have someone to push me. If I did not have someone with me (or someone who just didn't want to push me...I'm looking at you, big bro), then basically it was a no go for the swings. From that moment on, I couldn't wait to be tall enough to go on the swing. I kept wishing and waiting for it to come.

And finally, it did. A couple years later my legs had decided to grow and I was able to sit on the swing seat and touch my feet to the ground. Huzza! It felt oh so sweet to be able to do this myself, to be able take myself to new heights and see over buildings. It was truly amazing.

But after only a little while of doing this, I realized that I missed the old way of being on the swings. Of having team work with another person to get me to go higher and higher on the swings. And to be honest, I missed that I could kind of be lazy sometimes because someone else was pushing me. And though at my 7 or 8 years I did not realize it, the swings had truly taught me some things.

They taught me to not wish away my life and instead live for the moment because one day, you may wish you had it back. If we don't enjoy where we are, when we're there and instead yearn for the future, we're going to one day realize what we missed and yearn for the past. And what kind of life is that? Life goes by so crazy fast that if we don't enjoy it, it'll be gone before we know it. I know it's hard to do ( heck, I still have trouble) but I think if we all tried to do it, we'd be much better off.

The swings also made me see a parallel between my younger and older self. The shorter version of me is me when I was a child/teenager. Still literally feels like yesterday that I was playing hopscotch or prepping for my driver's test. But in reality, I was finishing a final research paper and driving around a HUGE (okay, maybe huge to me) city with little to no ease. So the taller me is my grown up self. I'm a grown up. Feels so weird to type that and I'm not sure when that happened, but I'm an adult. I'm going to doctor's appointments, job interviews, paying for my own gas and housing and buying my own food. I'm no longer the short little girl who needed help on the swings; I'm the taller girl making things happen for herself. Its weird. But good.

So what I want you take away from this is that yes, there is always a better tomorrow. But sometimes there is good "right now, right this minute" that we should all embrace. There is nothing wrong with hoping for the future or reliving the past, but there is a present we need to acknowledge too. Because, hey, the present was once the future and will be the past, so might as well make the most of it while we've got it!

Today is Fill-in-the-Blank Day

Hi Peeps!

Seeing as yesterday was April Fool's Day ( and no, I was neither the pranker or prankee...maybe I'll be one or the other next year? ;) ), it reminded me of a thought I had when I was younger. You see, I was always sad that my birthday, which in April, rarely fell on or near a holiday. For some reason, this made me very sad and if I'm being honest, I am still somewhat disappointed as an adult. But what I now have, that I didn't have when I was young, is the internet. * cue explosion Danisnotonfire style* ( look him up:  https://www.youtube.com/user/danisnotonfire)

Any who, the point of this blog is about the fact that I now have possession of the internet ( in a really non-kidnappy way...that came out weird), I have discovered that there a TON of Celebratory Days/ weeks/ National Months of April that I didn't know about. Here's the official list:

I was aware of April Fools Day, Earth Day and that sometimes Good Friday and Easter happened in April, but National Shrimp Scampi Day and Blah, Blah, Blah Day? Among others, these are all so cool. But probably the one I'm most excited by is that fact that my birthday does in fact fall on a awesome national day. If I do say so myself.

Yes, that's right, I share my birthday with Pig in a Blanket Day. Since they are right up there as being one of my favorite foods, you can imagine just how pleased as punch I am with this discovery! More reason to eat them on my birthday I guess too. Le Yum!

My birth week is Administrative Assistants Week  and National Karaoke Week. Guess we know what people in the office will be doing after work! ;)

I encourage each and everyone of you to go look up your birthday, birth week and birth month. You may discover some interesting knowledge. And hey, if enough people start celebrating these days, maybe they'll start to print them on actual calendars. I'm looking at you Arbor Day.

We're all just a Bunch of Animals

Hi Peeps!

The other night, I was watching (yet again) the 1995 motion picture classic that is Balto. I have to say, it's right up there for being one of my all time favorite movies, animated or otherwise. Plus, as I got older and developed a crush on Kevin Bacon ( that's right, I said it) after watching him dance up a storm in Footloose and then found out he voiced the title character of the film, I loved it even more. Seriously, if you haven't watched it, do so. It is loosely based on a true story and also has a wonderful message for kids about embracing who you are. Just lovely really.

But no this post isn't just about Balto, but rather something that dawned on me while watching the scene ( alert: spoiler! In fact, there may be a lot more to follow. You've been warned!) when Balto is getting attacked by a ginormous bear. Anytime I see a wild animal attack another animal or person in a film, I always have this thought: that would never happen in real life. And not just because it's a movie, and that's where unrealistic things happen for the purpose of entertainment. That's what movies are for. No, I more so have this thought because animals rarely ever attack another living thing unless it provokes them ( like a mother animal attacking anything that comes within a sniff of her babies) or if it their food source ( like fox eats a rabbit). They just don't attack you for the fun of it.

Nevertheless, this is how it is depicted in many animated movies.
Not the actual bear scene from Balto(1995) , but this fan art was just to damn cool to pass up.

Mordu and Merida in Brave (2012). Now this is a bit different, as Mordu is more of plot device and not actual a true bear, so it will kind of prove my point.

Belle being attacked by a copious amount of wolves in Beauty and the Beast (1991)

Tarzan fighting against Sabor, a leopard that he holds a vendetta against for killing his parents in Tarzan (1999)

A wolf attacking and subsequently dragging Kristoff off the sled while Anna smugly watches in Frozen (2013).

In all these movies, and many others ( both animated and live-action), animals are shown to just attack anything because they randomly see them passing by. Yes, I know that there has to be some action, some terrifying attack scene. It's what makes a movie a movie. I'm not here to critique movies, as I really am not an expert on them. Like, not even close to an expert. I'm here to point out what I really should've noticed a long time ago when watching these movies. That is that these attacking animals are modeled after the only true animals that attack with little to no provocation most times: humans.

It really makes sense. Humans are the ones who think these ideas, write the scripts and animate these animals. So of course, we personify them. The protagonist animals are pretty much like people, so why not the vicious, secondary ( or primary, in the case of Mordu), attacking animals as well? Seems only fair. But it just kind of hit me, that wow, we are the only true animals that attack something for no reason sometimes. Like, you see a girl walk past you wearing something you find hideous. You either mentally degrade or verbally degrade her. But what did she ever really do to you, other than cross your path? Nothing. But in animated movies, this means enough to attempt to kill another living thing. And while we humans may not be tearing each others hearts out or using our claws to make someone bleed to death for being in our space ( though we have done it for other reasons), we are still in some capacity attacking another living thing. And we're really the only animal that does so on a regular basis.

Mordu is probably the best example of this as he was originally a human and even though he has lost pretty much all his humanity, he still attacks people more so like a human would than a real bear would. He just wants to attack anything that gets in his way ( and serve as way for Merida to discover her fate); a real bear will attack you if you're a.) a smaller animal they can eat b.) your impinging on their cubs or mate c.) if your threatening it with a gun or something and it wants to protect itself. d.) they're all rabified and stuff. Animals will not attack you if they don' feel threatened most times. There are probably cases of  where they may attack you just cuz, but more often than not, they won't be a Mordu. Or a Sabor. Or that nameless bear from Fox and the Hound.

No, this post was not some PSA about being kind to animals ( although you really should) or anything like that. It was just a random thought I had and wanted to share. It's interesting how animals are seen as dangerous in movies when really it is the personification of them that makes them seem so evil and dangerous in movies. Just an interesting thought.

14 years a Honeymooner

Hi Peeps!

So two days ago (Friday) I had a Doctors appointment. It was some follow up on blood work I had gotten done because recently, my left foot has been really swollen and slightly sore. I thought it was because of the fact that I had twisted my ankle really bad a year ago ( and yes, I didn't get it checked out because I could still wiggle my toes, so it wasn't broken, so why get it checked out? disclaimer: because you just should) and ever since then, when I walk on it too much, it gets swollen. But anyways, I went to the Dr., she sent me to get my blood done and then we had this said follow up. And she told me some news. Based on my blood and urine samples ( sorry for the details), it looks as if I 'm on my way to having diabetes.

....now this is where I should talk about how shocked I was. How I cried because I suddenly have this life long disease. But the thing is....none of that's true. And that's because I kind of was just waiting for the day this news would actually happen.

Let me explain.

Diabetes runs in my family on my dad's side. My Grandma had it. Her four children have/had it ( my Uncle passed away from Cancer in 2010). At least  three of my cousins have it. My older sister has it. Basically, it's big in my family. So obviously, I'm at an increased likelihood of getting it. In fact, I was told that when I was 8. At that time, I was diagnosed with what is called "Honeymoon Stage Diabetes". Basically that means I'm not free of diabetes ("single") but I'm not full fledge diabetic ("married and in it for life"). I'm just a "newlywed" to diabetes. Kind of odd, but meh it is what it is.
8 year old me

So for almost 14 years, I've kinda been waiting for the day my status changes from "newlywed'  or "honeymooner" to "just plain old married". And at almost 22, it looks like that day is nigh. It's not quite set in stone, but with my history, it might as well be. And I'm okay with it.

Wait...what?

Yes, I'm okay with it. Firstly, I've had 14 years of already eating and living like I'm diabetic, so it's not a huge life change. It was a big change when I was 8 and could no longer eat copious amount of pasta ( which I LURVE) or chow down on all my Halloween candy in one night. But the fact is, I can  still eat those things. Contrary to popular belief, people with diabetes can still eat...
15 year old me

...Things like cake...

20 year old self. Thanksgiving. Pumpkin Pie. Yeah Buddy!

...and pie with ice cream...

20 year old self with former college roomies <3

...and just ice cream...with, you know, ALL the fixins'

And every other sweet thing in between. And I won't die. The key is moderation. I can eat some sweet things in moderation. But I don't have to cut them completely out of my diet. I just need to cut back. Just a little lesson for all those people out there who think that as a diabetic we eat no sugar. We still eat natural sugar in things like fruits, because we can't cut them off completely. We just need to eat healthy. And by that, I mean well rounded. We can't have to much carbs or sweets in a meal. We have to have our dairy, protein, veggies and fruits too, with a little bit of healthy fats. And yes, even a bit of sugar. Our bodies can't change the sugar we eat to energy as easily, but it still can do it to some extent. You know that Guide to Healthy Eating you should pay attention to, but never really do? Yeah, we just kinda live our lives by that thing.

So, no, don't feel sorry for me. Don't say "Oh my God this is terrible" or "you poor thing". I don't want to hear it. I don't deserve to hear it. I'm not dying! I'm just eating healthy and managing my health, just like everyone else should be doing too. There are people who deserve sympathy much more than I do.
Living with diabetes is just that: Living. I've been doing so for almost a third of my life. And I'm still going. I hang out with my friends and have fun. I read amazing books, spend too much time on the internet and paint my nails every other day. I'm not any different than I would be if I was never told this news at 8. I'm probably a lot healthier in fact, even if it doesn't seem that way to you. I'm happy, I've got a great group of people around me and I'm doing what I want. Diabetes isn't going to stop me from being me. It's just going to be another part of who I am.

21 and happy <3
